The three-member committee formed to survey the Sterlite copper smelter plant in Thoothukudi will be holding a public hearing in Chennai today.
According to reports, the team, led by retired judge Justice Tarun Agarwala, will hearing public opinion on the shutting down of Sterlite plant, from stake-holders and others in Chennai.
The team was constituted by the National Green Tribunal to check on the public complaints against the Sterlite plant in Thoothukudi regarding water and air pollution. The committee also held a public hearing in Thoothukudi yesterday.
The protest against Sterlite snowballed into a major fracas after 100 days of quiet agitation. This led to police firing in which several people were killed and many injured. This led to the Government of Tamilnadu ordering the closure of the plant.
Sterlite has appealed against the closure with the NGT and moved the court.
