In a tragic incident, a first year computer student died of suspected heart attack while he was playing kabaddi at Venkulam near Thiru Uthirakosamangai in the district on Saturday.
Police said A. Sooriya, 21, studying first year computer application hailing from Kaattukoodalur in Cuddalore district, was playing for Venkulam team in the annual two-day kabaddi tournament when he died.
After a ride and securing two points, Sooriya returned to defend a rider from the other side when he swooned and fell down. He was rushed to the government district headquarters hospital here and doctors declared him brought dead.
A post-mortem would reveal the reason, doctors said.
The deceased, who studied physical education, was among four players from Cuddalore district playing for Venkulam team, tournament organiser Venkulam D. Raju said. He had been organising the tournament on behalf of Naam Tamizhar Katchi.
The Venkulam team was playing against Ramanathapuram Periyar Nagar team in the quarter finals, he said. In all, 37 teams were taking part in the tournament, which began on Saturday, he added.
The tournament was abandoned after the incident. Parents of the deceased were informed and they were on their way here. The Thiru Uthirakosamangai police have registered a case.
